Eric Ravilious Greenhouse: Cyclamen and Tomatoes Art Print.
This captivating depiction of a glasshouse draws the viewer down the central aisle, to be bathed in the glare of hot sunlight. You can almost feel the humidity, and smell the earthy odour from the pots, and the distinctive yet hard to describe tang of the tomato plants, mingled with the floral yet spicy notes of the cyclamen. The greenhouse in question is in Firle, East Sussex, just a couple of miles walk from Furlongs, the house belonging to the Firle estate in which his friend Peggy Angus lived. Ravilious often gained inspiration from this house – paintings he completed there include familiar titles such as Caravans, Furlongs, and Tea at Furlongs.
This image is also available as a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
Eric Ravilious (22 July 1903 – 2 September 1942) was an exceptional watercolourist, wood engraver and designer. He grew up in the shadow of the Sussex Downs in the coastal town of Eastbourne, the surrounding landscape of which heavily influenced many of his best known works. His instantly recognisable style, palette and choice of subject have an almost universal appeal, a blend which has increased in popularity with the passing of time, particularly in the first two decades of the 21st century.
