Eric Ravilious ‘Sussex Landscape’, wood engraving, 1931.

Said to be a depiction of the magnificent tithe barn at Alciston, Sussex. If so it’s quite an imaginitive rendering; not so much that it is unrealistic, but more that not all the elements present in the actual landscape would be visible from this vantage point, and indeed whether this vantage point could be achieved at all, outside of the artist’s imagination. This is all unimportant however, as anyone who knows this part of the world will also know he has condensed it perfectly.
