This image depicts the night-time rooftops of Carlton Hill, St. John’s Wood, London, where he lived during his tenure as Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools. He did so until the outbreak of World War Two, when the onset of the blitz, when a retreat to the countryside was the wise decision.
