‘Sunrise in September’, George Clausen, oil on canvas, 1924.

George Clausen (1852-1944) was a British artist who worked in numerous mediums including watercolour, drypoint, mezzotint, but it probably best known for his oils. His nocturnal paintings are amongst our favourites (see Summer Night), and rivalled only by his evocations of sunrise, so delicately and convincingly depicted here.
