John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 – 1893) was a self-taught English artist specialising in painting nocturnes. He was known to use a camera-obscurer (an optical device which projects an image onto a surface) in the creation of his works, a technique which prompted some contemporary critics to reject him as a serious artist. However, most consider the effect on the viewer as being of greater importance than the technique used to achieve it, and in this, John Atkinson Grimshaw leaves us in no doubt.
